The New Euphemism

 Well it seems the governor of South Carolina has given us a new euphemism: "Hiking the Appalachians" for cheating on one's spouse. I think Jon Stewart nailed it with the following comment on the Daily Show this week:
"Oh, marital infidelity, you're just another run of the mill human being whose simple moralizing about the sanctity of marriage is only marred by the complexities of their own life. Well just another politician with a conservative mind and a liberal penis."
This was, of course, a reference to Gov. Sanford's often stated views about marriage which he (and other conservatives) feels should ONLY be between a man and a woman. It is the irony and hypocrisy of it all.  They argue that legalizing same sex marriage would undermine heterosexual marriage, but then get caught in these extra-marital affairs or soliciting sex from call girls or in public restrooms or having porn on their computers.....all of which undermine their own marriages.

Wives will now, when angry at their husbands, have to stop saying, "Oh, go take a hike!"

Good way of communicating this... (and, I LOVED the quote, 'a conservative mind and a liberal penis.' That's too funny, though admittedly sad.) I always thought of all politicians as hypocrites - so regardless of what side of the fence I'm on, this hypocrisy doesn't shock me. It is, sadly... the norm.

You always said it was the Dems with the problem of  marital infidelity and the GOP with financial infidelity. Seems the GOP figured the democrats were having more fun and wanted in on the action but forgot to stop the rhetoric... now they are the "Do as I say not as I do" Party.

@Passionflwr86 - It really is kind of sad, but then we in the U.S. have rather puritanical views about this stuff compared to views in other parts of the world....and we seem to expect our political leaders to have higher moral standards than the people who elect them.

@murisopsis - Yeah, I remember saying when Democrats got in trouble it was always for screwing around cheating on their wives (spouses) but Republicans got in trouble it was for screwing the whole darn country. At the time I thought that was an original thought, but then I heard others using the same kind of comparison. See you soon.

@icepearlz - Thanks for missing me. I've been busy having some landscaping done and having company and catching up on other stuff. I have checked regularly your site and other Xanga blogs but haven't left comments or written on my own.

@ZSA_MD -

That ("Take a hike") phrase is probably archaic, and nowadays an angry wife would probably just say, "Shove it!" or something like that....but it came to mind altho' never said it to my sweet husband.
